On March 9, 2009, US President Barack Obama signed an executive order which removed restrictions on federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research. The order fulfilled Obama's campaign promise to reverse the limitations that were put in place eight years before by President George W. Bush. The policy was later challenged in the US District Court for the District of Columbia by the Nightlight Christian Adoptions, an advocacy group, which the judge held did not have standing.
