St. John's law school names new dean
Adam Henry

Leading today's law school news is the announcement that Professor Mary Daly of Fordham University School of Law has been appointed the next dean of St. John's University School of Law. Daly specializes in ethics at Fordham: she holds an endowed chair in legal ethics, co-directs the school's center for law and ethics, and chairs the city bar's committee on professional and judicial ethics.

In other news, The Daily Iowan writes of a University of Iowa student who will become the school's first combined MD/JD degree recipient when he graduates in May. The Iowa program received curricular approval last month and joins just 14 other such combined degree programs across the country. Also from Iowa, earlier this month, the dean of the University of Iowa College of Law, N. William Hines, was elected to serve as president elect of the Association of American Law Schools, a non-profit association of 164 law schools, for the year 2004.

Finally, according to the February issue of Wired magazine, Professor Glenn Reynolds of the University of Tennessee College of Law writes the world's most visited weblog. InstaPundit, the weblog he began in 2001, now receives more than 100,000 hits per day. Reynolds wisely recommends JURIST to his many readers in the links that occupy the left-hand column of his site.

GW law professor honored for book on Brown v. Board
Adam Henry

Leading today's law school news are announcements from two schools. First, the George Washington University Law School announces that Professor Robert Cottrol has been honored with the 2003 Langum Project for Historical Literature prize for his book, "Brown v. Board of Education: Caste, Culture and the Constitution." Cottrol's book, which explores the cultural context of the case and the pivotal role played by the NAACP, is part of a burgeoning body of legal literature as the 50th anniversary of the decision in Brown v. Board approaches in May 2004. A number of law schools are hosting symposia on the landmark decision in the coming months, about which JURIST's Paper Chase will have more later.

Second, the University of Arizona's James E. Rogers College of Law announces the return of Chief Justice William Rehnquist to teach a two-week, one-credit law course in February entitled "The Supreme Court in the History of the United States." Rehnquist has taught the course at Arizona for each of the past ten years. The chief justice made news earlier this week when he rejected calls for the recusal of his fellow justice Antonin Scalia from an upcoming case. Dana Goldfarb offers the full story for JURIST's Paper Chase here.

AALS honors Wisconsin law professor for labor law work
Adam Henry

Leading today's law school news, the University of Wisconsin Law School reports that Professor James Jones has been honored by the Labor and Employment section of the Association of American Law Schools for his contributions in the fields of labor and employment discrimination law. Among his many firsts, Jones taught the nation's first known full-semester law course on employment discrimination law.

In other law school news, Harvard Law School reports that its Student Advocates for Human Rights group has filed an amicus brief with the Indian National Human Rights Commission, arguing for the Indian government to investigate the disappearance of thousands of Sikhs in Punjab in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The brief will be the first international submission to be heard by the commission.

Trial lawyers group honors U. Arizona law school
Adam Henry

Leading today's law school news, the American College of Trial Lawyers has presented its annual Emil Gumpert Award for Excellence in Teaching Trial Advocacy Award to the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona. According to the university's Daily Wildcat, the "award honors the work and dedication of professor Thomas Mauet and the trial advocacy program he developed during his 25 years" at Arizona. Mauet and company will be the last to receive the award in its current incarnation, as the ACTA believes its original objective of fostering the teaching of trial advocacy has been "principally satisfied."

Also on the awards front, the University of Texas at Austin School of Law announces that Professor Norma Cantu has been named a recipient of the 2004 Spirit of Excellence Award from the American Bar Association's Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity. Cantu will join her five fellow recipients at the presentation of awards next Saturday.

And on the funding front, there are stories today about two schools' efforts to simply stay put. The Daily Camera reports that the University of Colorado School of Law is still in search of funding for a new law school building. The ABA has warned that without a new facility, Colorado could lose its accreditation. Meanwhile, the Camera reports that nearby University of Denver College of Law, just 35 miles from Boulder, "is gaining in academic prestige as it enjoys its physical superiority over CU." Elsewhere, Dickinson School of Law Dean Philip McConnaughay has told alumni that the school is close to a financial package that could keep Dickinson in Carlisle, rather than moving it to the University Park campus of Penn State, with which it has merged. The Sentinel carries the full story here.
