Indonesia editor to be tried for publishing Muhammad cartoon

[JURIST] The editor of Indonesian online newspaper Rakyat Merdeka will face trial for publishing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad [JURIST news archive] on the website in February, his lawyers said Friday. Editor Teguh Santosa was arrested by Indonesian prosecutors on Wednesday night and was held for 24 hours before his release late Thursday night. He is charged with "inciting animosity and hatred" towards Islam and his lawyer said that a trial could begin within three weeks [AP report].

Santosa told the Koran Tempo newspaper on Friday that the cartoons were published to give his readers the full story on the cartoon controversy. AFP has more.
