Yemen calls for probe into Guantanamo suicides, calling deaths 'inhumane'
Jaime Jansen at 12:04 PM ET

[JURIST] Yemeni officials on Thursday called for a second investigation into last week's detainee suicides [JURIST report] by one Yemeni and two Saudi Arabians held at the US detention center at Guantanamo Bay [JURIST news archive], saying the deaths exemplify the "inhumane conditions of detainees" at Guantanamo. The three men reportedly hung themselves in their cells with bedsheets and cloths, though their families have expressed skepticism at the reports, saying the three strict Muslims would not have violated Islam by committing suicide.
The US Department of Defense [official website] on Tuesday rejected [JURIST report] a demand by Amnesty International [advocacy website] for an independent inquiry into the deaths, maintaining that the military's investigation will be sufficient. Saudi Arabia has already renewed efforts [JURIST report] to have all remaining Saudis detained at Guantanamo to be returned to Saudi custody, while human rights groups and some governments have again urged the US to close Guantanamo [JURIST report]. Reuters has more.
