BREAKING NEWS ~ Canada passes same-sex marriage bill
Bernard Hibbitts at 9:22 PM ET

[JURIST] In a Tuesday evening sitting Canada's House of Commons has passed a bill [C-38 text] that will legalize same-sex marriage across Canada. The legislation, presented by the minority Liberty Party government as a non-partisan "free vote" for MPs other than Cabinet ministers, was approved 158-133. Most members of the opposition Conservative Party voted against the measure, with leader Stephen Harper promising that if his party is voted in at the next election the measure will be "revisited". Once the bill in approved by the Liberal-dominated Senate and given royal assent Canada will become only the third country in the world to legalize gay marraige, joining the Netherlands and Belgium.
