[JURIST] The European Union issued a draft document on Tuesday regarding the proliferation of digital rights management (DRM), often used to protect copyrighted software and music files. The EU's advisory body on data protection and privacy is specifically concerned about the way that DRM can be used to identify individuals and thus track people. For example, when a music track is purchased online, the purchaser may have to enter account information and a unique identifier. The information gained about identity and musical taste is then used to target marketing campaigns. Another concern cited by the EU is the issue of ISPs giving identity information about individual file sharers to record industries who may then pursue legal action.
