Members of Sudan's parliament said Thursday that US pressures over Darfur would encourage rebels in the region and spur other Sudanese separatist movements to take up arms. As previously reported on JURIST's Paper Chase, the US has circulated a draft resolution threatening punitive actions against Sudan if security in the Darfur region is not improved. Additionally, Secretary of State Colin Powell is scheduled to speak about the Darfur situation at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee meeting Thursday, where he is expected to make a determination that the violence in Darfur constitutes genocide. According to Sudan's Deputy Assembly Speaker Angelo Beda, the US actions could lead to a breakdown in the ongoing peace talks. Reuters has more.
