British lawyers appointed to defend Milosevic
Jeannie Shawl at 9:34 AM ET

Two British lawyers have been assigned by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to defend Slobodan Milosevic on charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Steven Kay and Gillian Higgins have been neutral observers since the start of Milosevic's trial and will take over his case beginning next Tuesday. ICTY judges have said they will issue a later order to set out further conduct of the trial, but have said that Milosevic can still name a lawyer of his choice and can remain actively involved in the conduct of his defense. As reported earlier this morning on JURIST's Paper Chase, Milosevic reacted to the Hague tribunal's decision to appoint defense counsel by saying that he will appeal the court's ruling. BBC News has more. The ICTY provides background information on the Milosevic case.
