Witness says Marine used reasonable force against Iraqi prisoner
Jeannie Shawl at 10:17 AM ET

According to testimony given at court-martial proceedings against Sgt. Gary Pittman, the Iraqi inmate who was beaten by Marines at a US detention camp in Iraq was an "ornery prisoner." Pittman faces charges of assault and dereliction of duty for the beating of Nagem Hatab, who died two days after arriving at the US-run detention camp and whose autopsy showed seven broken ribs and a crushed windpipe. Pfc. William Roy testified at Pittman's trial that he believed reasonable and necessary force was used to subdue Hatab after he resisted commands. AP has more. JURIST's Paper Chase has background on Pittman's court-martial.
