Sudan sets timeline for UN resolution implementation
Jeannie Shawl at 9:27 AM

A Sudanese police chief has said that Khartoum will start disarming Arab militias in the Darfur region next week, as mandated by the recent UN Security Council resolution. According to Brigadier General Jamal al-Hueres, the disarmament of state-sponsored militias "will be carried out both on a voluntary basis and through searches carried out by the police." AFP has the full story. Meanwhile, more than 100,000 Sudanese participated in a state-organized protest against the UN resolution. Protesters delivered a message to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Khartoum office demanding Annan retract a statement accusing Sudanese "government security personnel" of threatening displaced people. AP has more.
