Megan's Law awaits Schwarzenegger's approval
Amit Patel at 3:28 PM ET

A bill passed by the California legislature which would give all Californians access to free information regarding sex offenders including names, photos, and home addresses via the internet, is now in front of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Supporters feel the so-called Megan's Law database will help citizens protect their children and improve the accuracy of the sex offender registry. Detractors think the new database would encourage attacks against law-abiding ex-offenders and their families. Megan's Law is named after 7-year-old Megan Kanka, a New Jersey girl who was raped and killed in 1994 by a child molester who lived across the street from her house. Read Megan's Law here [PDF]. For more information on how Megan's Law will work in California, visit the California Attorney General's website. AP has more.
