Lawyers group protests police treatment of observers at RNC demonstration
Bernard Hibbitts at 1:15 PM ET

The New York City chapter of the National Lawyers Guild said Monday that New York police had held arrested Republican National Convention protesters for up to 34 hours, had denied attorneys' requests to see clients in detention, and had deliberately targeted NLG legal observers, arresting, harassing and even allegedly assaulting several. The claims were made in the wake of a Sunday demonstration in New York City that drew over 100,000 anti-Bush protestors. Although police had anticipated up to 1000 arrests, the orderliness of the protest led to only some 200 being made. Washington Square News has more. The National Lawyers Guild provides a legal guide for RNC protestors and legal observers here; the NYPD site for Convention-related information is here (JURIST's Paper Chase notes that NYPD press releases on pre-convention arrests and protests, formerly available at the site, have now been removed - compare this August 29 cached copy from Google).
