A few legal stories appearing in Monday's foreign press.... The UK's Telegraph reports on the first bank to operate under Islamic law. The Islamic Bank of Britain was given approval by the Financial Services Authority to provide accounts which complied with Sharia principles. Sharia law requires ethical investments and prohibits charging interest.... In Australia, the Shepparton News reviews new laws providing additional protection for paramedics. The amendments to the Ambulance Services Act and the Summary Offences Act create stiff penalties for harassing or attacking paramedics.... AllAfrica.com follows debate over expanding Nigeria's abortion laws. Currently, abortions, other than those required to save the mother's life, are punishable by seven years imprisonment for the woman involved and up to fourteen years imprisonment for the doctor performing the procedure. Despite criminalization, reports indicate the rate of abortion in Nigeria is higher than that in West European states.
