Federal judge grants stay in Hamdi case
Jeannie Shawl at 8:31 PM ET

US District Judge Robert Doumar Thursday delayed proceedings in Yaser Hamdi's case so that attorneys can continue their negotiations for his release from custody (JURIST's Paper Chase has background on the request to stay proceedings). Hamdi, who has been held in a Navy brig since being captured on the Afghanistan battlefield three years ago, was the subject of the recent Supreme Court ruling that enemy combatants may not be detained indefinitely without legal rights. Read Thursday's order here [PDF]. AP has more. The US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia has case information, including the docket with all pleadings, orders and opinions in Hamdi's case.
