Chilean judge to question Pinochet next week
Amit Patel at 3:43 PM ET

Chilean Judge Juan Guzman will question former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet next week. Pinochet will be asked about his role in Operation Condor, a joint effort by South American dictators to wipe out dissidents, which resulted in the death of 19 Chileans in the mid-1970s. Chile's highest court stripped Pinochet of his immunity concerning the matter last week. Judge Guzman has also requested a list of psychiatric experts to examine Pinochet after he testifies. Pinochet's lawyers plan to use the mental health defense in the Operation Condor case. Just yesterday, Pinochet's lead attorney called for Judge Guzman to be removed from the case for showing antagonism toward Pinochet. Reuters has more, and from Santiago, Chile's El Mercurio newspaper has local coverage in Spanish.
