Chess champ appeals Japanese deportation order
Jeannie Shawl at 1:41 PM ET

Former world chess champion Bobby Fischer, who was arrested in Japan for traveling with a revoked US passport (see this previous report on JURIST's Paper Chase), has appealed Japan's decision to deport him, saying that his passport was revoked without due process and should still be valid. Fischer is wanted in the US for playing a 1992 chess match in Yugoslavia in violation of international sanctions. AP has more. Fischer has also applied for political asylum in Japan as an alternative means to avoid being deported. AFP has more.
