Abu Hamza arrested in UK under Terrorism Act
Brandon Smith at 2:41 PM ET

Radical Islamist cleric Abu Hamza was formally arrested Thursday in London under section 41 of UK's Terrorism Act 2000 on suspicion of being involved in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Hamza was already being held in Belmarsh high security prison fighting extradition to the US where he has been indicted on 11 terrorism-related charges.

UK police say the charges against Hamza, which supercede extradition, are connected with a totally independant investigation from any the US is conducting. The UK stripped Hamza of his citizenship last year under accusations without charges of supporting terrorism, and he has oftern been described as one of the two most influential anti-Western Muslim preachers in the UK.
