Law in the foreign press ~ Thursday, July 8
Jeannie Shawl at 7:40 AM ET

Zak Shusterman is off. Here are some of the stories in Thursday's foreign press....
The Japan Times reports that the Tokyo High Court has rejected an appeal filed by a teacher punished for refusing to play Japan's national anthem during a school ceremony. The teacher had argued that the school breached Japan's Constitution by trying to force her to play the anthem, but the Tokyo judge said that public servants' freedom of thought and conscience are subject to restraint for the sake of public welfare.... The Jerusalem Post notes that Israel is concerned that the upcoming World Court decision on its security fence could be used by the UN to level sanctions against Israel. Israel's Foreign Ministry has begun lobbying for support in the UN, saying that the fence is an important part of the disengagement plan.... The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the Australian Federal Police Commissioner has called for changes to the right to silence enjoyed by terrorism suspects. Mick Keelty has said that juries should be allowed to consider whether a refusal to answer questions is an attempt to avoid explaining their actions.
