International tribunal reduces sentence for Bosnian Croat general on appeal
Chris Buell at 9:00 AM ET

The Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia Thursday reduced from 45 to nine years the sentence of a Bosnian Croat general after quashing many of the charges against him. Tihomir Blaskic was convicted in 2000 for crimes against humanity, war crimes and violations of the Geneva Conventions, but these charges were overturned. Judges in the appeals chamber upheld charges that Blaskic used human shields and prisoners to construct military facilities. Read the appeals chamber's full ruling here [PDF] and a summary of the judgment here. Reuters has more.
