French court annuls first same-sex marriage
Jeannie Shawl at 9:29 AM ET

A French court declared the country's first same-sex marriage, which was conducted in June by a local mayor, "null and void" Tuesday. The couple's lawyers said that no article in the French civil code forbids same-sex marriage, but prosecutors said that the marriage was not in compliance with French law. The couple has said they will appeal Tuesday's ruling. Noel Mamere, the mayor who presided over the marriage, was suspended for one month for his actions. BBC News has the full story. Mamere's website has more (in French) on gay marriage. JURIST's Paper Chase has additional background on Mamere's suspension.
