BREAKING NEWS ~ Security Council approves Sudan resolution
Bernard Hibbitts at 11:35 AM ET

AP is reporting that the United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution threatening economic consequences for Sudan if it does not disarm Arab militias blamed for widespread atrocities in the western Darfur region of the country. Two members of the 15-member body abstained. US UN Ambassador John Danforth discussed the US-sponsored resolution, which has gone through several changes, in a press briefing in New York yesterday. Read a transcript of his remarks here. The UN provides a backgrounder on the Darfur situation here.

UPDATE: The resolution sets the deadline for compliance at 30 days and also includes a requirement that those arrested from the Arab militias be tried. Abstaining from the vote were China and Pakistan. BBC News has more.

UPDATE 2: A summary record of the Security Council meeting, including the text of the Sudan resolution, is now available here.
