US subpoenas four journalists in terror case against lawyer

The New York Times, Reuters and Newsday are seeking to quash subpoenas for four of their journalists to testify in the trial of a US lawyer facing terrorism charges. Attorney Lynne Stewart, who represents Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, is facing charges of helping Abdel-Rahman communicate from prison with terrorists. Government prosecutors are seeking to have the journalists confirm in court quotes they attributed to Stewart in their stories. The media groups argue that the subpoenas represent a dangerous precedent for press freedom. US District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge John Koeltl has not ruled on the motions to quash yet. Reuters has more.
