DOJ declassifies documents on "dirty bomb" suspect
Jeannie Shawl at 2:18 PM ET

According to documents declassified by the Department of Justice today, Jose Padilla, the "dirty bomb" terror suspect, was preparing to blow up hotels and apartment buildings in the US as well as planning an attack with a "dirty bomb" radiological device, before being detained as an "enemy combatant." AP has the full story. The Smoking Gun has made available a DOJ summary of Padilla's activities with Al Qaeda and President Bush's order that Padilla be held as an enemy combatant. The US Supreme Court is currently considering whether the war on terrorism gives the government power to seize and detain a United States citizen in the United States based on a determination by the President that he is an enemy combatant. The Supreme Court has a transcript [PDF] of the oral arguments in the case and Wiggin & Dana has compiled case documents here.

UPDATE: This Department of Defense summary of its information on Padilla was also released Tuesday.
