US deserter accuses US of war crimes in Iraq war
Jeannie Shawl at 1:08 PM ET

Jeremy Hinzman, a US soldier who deserted his unit before being deployed to Iraq and subsequently sought asylum in Canada, has said that the war in Iraq was illegal and accused the US of committing war crimes. Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board is set to begin hearings in July to determine whether or not to grant Hinzman asylum. The Canadian Press has more. In a related story, a press conference has been called for Thursday in Toronto to launch the War Resisters Support Campaign and to demand that the Canadian government make provisions so that US war resisters can receive sanctuary. CNW has more. The CBC provides background information on Vietnam-era draft dodgers who sought sanctuary in Canada.
