Same-sex couples file for marriage licenses in Massachusetts
Bernard Hibbitts at 8:35 AM ET

Hundreds of same-sex couples are expected to file for marriage licenses in Massachusetts today as the state becomes the first to legalize gay marriage pursuant to a court ruling last year. The first applications were filed in Cambridge, where the town clerk's office opened its doors for Monday business just after midnight. The Boston Globe has extensive local coverage, including video from the New England Cable Network. GLAD, the Massachusetts-based Gay & Lesbian Advocates and Defenders Association, is celebrating marriage equality on its website and offers an online marriage toolkit. The Boston Globe reprints a statement by Boston Arhbishop Sean O'Malley noting his "deep sadness" at the authorization of same-sex marriages.

UPDATE: AP is now reporting that the first gay marriage in Massachusetts was performed in Cambridge at 9:15 AM ET.
