Massachusetts AG orders clerks to stop issuing marriage licenses to out-of-state gay couples
Chris Buell at 4:23 PM ET

Massachusetts Attorney General Thomas Reilly today ordered four clerks to stop issuing marriage licenses to gay couples from out-of-state. Gov. Mitt Romney had requested Thursday that Reilly take action against the clerks, who were defying an edict by Romney not to issue such licenses. Both Reilly and Romney based their actions on a 1913 law that bars couples from being married in Massachusetts if the marriage will not be recognized by their home state. One of the clerks said Thursday he would comply with an order by Reilly, but none of the other three has signified their intentions. AP has more.
