Former Abu Ghraib prison general suspended after abuse scandal
Jeannie Shawl at 2:08 PM ET

Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski has been suspended from her command of the 800th Military Police Brigade in the wake of the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal. In his investigative report [PDF] on abuses of Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib, Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba faulted Karpinski for paying too little attention to the day-to-day operations of the prison and for not reminding military police under her command of the requirements of the Geneva Conventions, despite documented instances of abuse. AP has more. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times Monday, Karpinski said she was "set up" by Army officials who had her sign a letter to the Red Cross indicating that Iraqi detainees were being given the best treatment possible and that improvements were continually being made. Karpinski said that at the time she didn't know the depth of the problems uncovered at Abu Ghraib. The LA Times has more. FOX News carries this transcript of a May 4 TV interview with Karpinski.
