WEBCITES - California county puts sex offender maps online
jdl at 12:37 PM ET

Megan's Law, enacted in California in 1996, created a database of sex offenders who had been released from prison, allowing parents and other concerned citizens to find out whether a convicted sex offender was living in their area. As reported last week on JURIST's Paper Chase, the California Assembly has passed a controversial bill that would put sex offenders addresses directly online. Meanwhile, the Napa County Sheriff's Department offers this mapping website.

Without revealing exact addresses, the site provides maps of the general areas where sex offenders live. The site can be searched by user's address. BCN has more.
