Vivendi withdraws lawsuit against former CEO

In Tuesday's corporations and securities law news, French telecommunications and media company Vivendi Universal has withdrawn its legal action against former chairman and CEO Jean-Marie Messier. The company, which had sued Messier and his former chief operating officer, Eric Licoys, over a $25.7 million severance payment awarded to Messier when he left the company in 2002, agreed to drop the action as part of a settlement with the SEC. The Commodity Futures Exchange Commission is looking into cattle futures trading data on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange as far back as Dec. 9 to investigate whether commodities traders profited from advance knowledge of the first US case of mad cow disease.
