Lawsuits abound from NY ferry crash
Brandon Smith at 4:08 PM ET

Leading Tuesday’s news in tort law, the New York Times reports that despite warnings from the New York State Bar Association, lawyers in New York have been advertising on television and in newspapers (and, it seems, also on the web) for business from survivors of last month’s Staten Island ferry crash. So far, forty survivors have announced their intentions to sue, and the total for all the claims reaches $1.3 billion. Lawyers are concerned that many victims and survivors are unaware of the ninety day filing deadline and sought to make people aware through the ads. The claims range from wrongful death ($500 million) and severe injuries ($120 million) to loss of sleep ($500 million) and various emotional traumas ($10 million).
