UK to adopt EU Copyright Directive

CDR-Info reports that Parliament will soon pass the EU Copyright Directive, a broad set of laws designed to protect content from rampant piracy. The heavily punitive directive resembles its American counterpart, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) [PDF], but some critics argue that its punishments go too far. Microsoft and other companies have criticized the European law as so protective of content that it threatens to stifle innovation. The UK Patent Office carries a consultation paper on future implementation of the Copyright Directive.
